What Drives The Cost Of A Brand Film?
Nobody will tell you what a film costs without a conversation first, because the honest answer depends on the brief. So rather than a number, here are the four things that decide it, what each one is worth according to published figures, and the order they should be decided in.
These are the same four our pricing page names. This is the long version, with the figures attached. Every figure below carries its source at the end of the article. None of them is a quote and none of them is our price. They are published market figures, and they are the figures our own estimate tool is built from.
One: how long the finished piece is
Length drives the shot count, and the shot count drives everything behind it.
On a physical shoot that shows up as days. Published Dubai timelines put a simple piece at four to six weeks from brief to delivery and a complex one at eight to twelve, with finishing alone running three to six weeks.
In a generative pipeline it shows up as generated footage and skilled hours. Published 2026 working practice is about two to three seconds of raw footage for every finished second, because a shot takes about three attempts to land, and about seven to thirteen skilled hours for every finished minute, covering planning, supervising the generation, sound and edit.
The pattern is the same either way. Length is not linear, and it is not the biggest lever.
Two: how many languages it ships in
On a physical shoot, matching lips means filming again with local talent, and that second pass of footage carries its own finishing as well.
There is a cheaper traditional route, and it is worth knowing about. Instead of filming the second language, a shoot can dub it, which published ranges put at roughly a quarter less than filming twice. The catch is that the lips do not match the words.
In a pipeline built around frame accurate lip sync, the published rate per minute covers only the computing for a language version, not the studio's work on it. That is why a campaign running in more than one market is worth thinking about early.
Three: how many formats it ships in
A campaign that runs wide, upright and square is doing more than a campaign that runs in one shape.
Our estimate tool puts it like this. Each extra version costs a shoot another day of crew and another pass of finishing, while on the pipeline it is another pass of compute and a few hours of checking. Reframing afterwards on a shoot is only possible if the shoot was planned for it, and it is charged for either way. We have written separately about why a shape cut out of a wide film is not the same thing as a shape that was composed.
What neither of us should pretend is that shapes are free. Format requirements are set at the brief stage, and that is where their cost is settled too.
Four: whether it has to be filmed for real
This is the one that changes the answer most, because it decides whether a shoot can be replaced at all.
Some pieces need real locations and real people on camera. There are five cases where that is plainly true: a real named person on camera, a live event, a physical product that has to be shown exactly as it is, broadcast or regulatory approvals that require actual footage, and real recognisable locations that have to be the real place. We would rather say that than talk anybody out of a shoot they need.
Where a shoot is the answer, the costs are real and published. Filming in a public location in Dubai needs a permit from the Dubai Film and TV Commission, at AED 520 to apply and AED 2,520 for the permit. Published Dubai day rates put a full crew of director, camera, sound and lighting at AED 10,000 to 50,000 a day, with camera and lighting hire billed separately at AED 2,000 to 8,000 a day on top. Those ranges are wide because published day rates run from junior crews to senior ones.
Read all of that as a floor rather than a total. The published ranges leave out talent and usage rights completely, because what they cost depends on who is cast and where the film runs. They also cover a public location only. Filming inside a hotel, a mall or a private development is charged separately and can reach AED 25,000 a day.
Where a film does not have to be filmed for real, that entire stage does not appear in the budget, because there is no location, no permit and no shoot day.
The order to decide them in
Most briefs take these in the wrong order, and that is where budgets get eaten.
Length is usually settled first because it feels like the main question, and languages and formats are treated as extras to be added at the end if money is left.
That is backwards. Whether it has to be filmed for real, in which languages and in which shapes, are the three that change how the whole thing has to be built, and all three are cheapest to answer before a single shot is designed. Length is the one that can safely move late, because trimming a film is a decision about the edit.
You can put your own answers into our estimate tool and see published shoot ranges beside the computing cost of generating the film, with the source named on every line. Neither figure is our price, and neither is a quote.
What this does not tell you
It does not tell you what your film costs. How we arrive at a number is written out on the pricing page, and the short version is that a project is priced from its brief and confirmed in writing before anything starts.
What it should tell you is which questions to ask before you accept anybody's number, and in which order. Those four questions are asked at the brief on every job we take, whichever of our eight kinds of production it is. They are listed on our services page.

Common questions
- Which of the four moves the number most?
- Whether the film has to be filmed for real. That is the question that decides whether a shoot can be replaced at all, and it changes the answer more than anything else on the list.
- Are the figures in this article your prices?
- No. They are published market figures, and each one carries the source our own estimate tool names for it. Nothing here is a quote. A project is priced from its brief and confirmed in writing before anything starts.
- Should we treat the shoot figures as the full cost?
- No, treat them as a floor. The published ranges leave out talent and usage rights entirely, and they cover a public location permit only. Filming inside a hotel, a mall or a private development is charged separately.
- Is length the main thing to decide?
- No, and treating it as the main thing is the common mistake. Length is the decision that can safely be adjusted late, because trimming a film is a question about the edit. Languages and formats change how the whole thing has to be built, so they should be settled first.
- Is a shoot ever the better answer?
- Yes, and there are five cases where it plainly is: a real named person on camera, a live event, a physical product that has to be shown exactly as it is, broadcast or regulatory approvals that require actual footage, and real recognisable locations that have to be the real place.

Working on something like this?
These notes describe how the studio runs its own productions. If you have a piece that needs the same discipline, send the brief over. Nothing is committed and nothing is quoted at that stage.
